“What Makes a Real Hero?” Invitation

This year’s theme asks: “What Makes a Real Superhero?”

Students are invited to write or draw their answer. Whether it’s a nurse, teacher, firefighter, parent, or classmate — we want to know what qualities make someone a true hero in your eyes.

The City of Hutchins is excited to invite the amazing students of Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School (grades 3–5) to take part in this year’s “Homegrown Heroes Christmas Parade” celebration! We believe our community’s future heroes are already walking your halls — learning, growing, and dreaming every day.

Homegrown Heroes Student Contest (Grades 3-5)

Topic: What Makes A Real Hero?

Directions:

Students in grades 3rd–5th are invited to participate in our Homegrown Heroes writing contest! We want to hear your voice as you describe what a real hero or superhero looks like — not just on TV, but right here in our community.

Your submission should:

• Be at least 100 words
• Be typed or neatly handwritten (no cursive, please)
• Highlight a real person in the community who inspires you
• Explain what makes them special
• Include at least one example of how they have made a positive impact in Hutchins

Gift cards will be awarded!

One winning student will receive a $100 Grand Prize, $50 for 2nd Place, and $25 for 3rd Place.
All writers will be honored during our parade celebration!

Submission Deadline: December 5th, 2025

How to Submit:

Let your words shine — and help us celebrate the everyday heroes who make Hutchins a brighter place!

Writing Prompts & Tips

  1. Think Beyond Capes: Real heroes don’t always wear costumes — they help, protect, and inspire others.

  2. Use Real Examples: Has someone in your family, school, or neighborhood done something brave or kind? Tell us their story!

  3. Be Creative: You can write a short essay, poem, or draw a hero scene.

  4. Include Hope: Share how you can become a hero in the next generation — through kindness, courage, or helping others.

Student Recognition

Winners will be honored at the “Homegrown Heroes Christmas Parade” on December 13th, 2025, and featured on the City of Hutchins website. Let’s celebrate the heroes among us — and those being raised right here in Hutchins!
